Motor Vehicle Accident:
Verulam

At approximately 5am on January 31, members of Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) were dispatched to Hazelmere Road in Canelands, Verulam, after receiving reports of a motor vehicle collision.

Upon arrival it was established that the driver of a Nissan Sentra collided into a Toyota Hino truck.

The driver of the Nissan Sentra was suspected of being under the influence of alcohol. The occupants of both vehicles were not injured. The Nissan Sentra was extensively damaged in the collision.

Police are investigating further.

SENIOR CITIZEN STABBED AND
ASSAULTED DURING ROBBERY:
VERULAM

Two people were injured after being stabbed and assaulted during an armed robbery in Datura Place in Redcliffe, Verulam, on February 1.

At approximately 12.30pm, members of Reaction Unit South Africa were dispatched to the home after receiving multiple calls from residents in the area reporting shots being fired. All available reaction officers were dispatched to the scene and upon arrival found two people bleeding excessively from stab wounds to the head.

It was established that five suspects who were armed with firearms and knives entered the home and held up an elderly couple. They stabbed a 74-year-old man in the head and severely assaulted him. A resident heard the victim’s cry for help and ran to the home where he found the elderly man lying on the floor while being kicked repeatedly in the head and in the face by one of the suspects.

He went to the victim’s aid, but was also stabbed in the head. The suspects fled the home and fired shots at other residents who heard the commotion and decided to investigate. One bullet struck a wall, narrowly missing one of the neighbours. A pair of sandals belonging to one of the suspects was found in the yard.

The Rusa Robinson R44 helicopter lifted off and conducted an extensive aerial search of the area while reaction officers conducted a ground search.

However, the suspects remain at large. It could not be confirmed if they fled on foot or if they had a getaway vehicle parked in the vicinity.

The robbers were seen fleeing the home with two bags, but it could not be established what exactly was stolen due to the victims being disoriented.

The injured were treated on scene by paramedics before being transported to hospital.

SIX-YEAR-OLD PUPIL KILLED:
OAKFORD

A six-year-old boy was killed after he was run over and dragged several metres by a taxi outside Oakford Primary in Oakford, Verulam, recently.

At approximately 2.40pm on February 1, members of Reaction Unit South Africa were called out to the scene by a teacher who witnessed the accident. Upon arrival, paramedics assessed the child and found that he had suffered extensive head and facial injuries. He showed no signs of life and was declared deceased at the scene.

According to a teacher, the child was waiting for his transport to pick him up from school when he ran onto the road from behind a stationary vehicle. He was run over and dragged several metres by a Toyota Hiace that was travelling downhill in the opposite direction.

Police are investigating further.

VEHICLE CRASHES INTO BUILDING: BRINDHAVEN

Members of Reaction Unit South Africa were called out to a service station on Rosemary Drive in Brindhaven after receiving reports of a vehicle that crashed into a building on February 3.

Upon arrival, it was established that a Somalian national had gone to the service station to get fuel.

As he was about to stop at the bowser, a learner driver pressed the accelerator instead of the brake. The NP 200 bakkie sped up and crashed into a wall.

The driver was not injured, however the vehicle was damaged extensively.

WOMAN ARRESTED FOR ROBBERY AND STABBING: VERULAM

A woman was arrested by members of Reaction Unit South Africa after she robbed and stabbed another woman on Groom Street in the Verulam CBD on February 3.

Reaction officers were dispatched to the scene after receiving several calls from the public reporting the incident. Upon arrival, it was established that the victim and her friend were walking in Groom Street when they were approached by two women. One suspect drew an Okapi pocket knife and robbed the victim of R1 000 in cash while her accomplice assaulted the victim with a brick. Shortly after handing over the cash, the suspect repeatedly stabbed the woman.

A piece of the knife broke off and was lodged in the victim’s head. The suspects fled the scene on foot.

Officers obtained a description of the suspect and proceeded to a bar in the vicinity where they found her consuming alcohol. The suspect, who resides in an informal settlement in Everest Heights, was positively identified by witnesses as the person who stabbed the victim. The knife used in the attack and the money were not recovered and were allegedly in the possession of the second suspect who is still at large.

The suspect was arrested and is being detained by the Verulam SAPS.

PEDESTRIAN SHOT DURING ALTERCATION: VERULAM

A man was injured after he was shot during an altercation on Wick Street in Verulam during the early parts of Saturday morning.

At approximately 4.30am, members of Reaction Unit South Africa were called out to the scene after receiving a call from a member of public reporting the shooting.

Upon arrival, it was established that the injured man and his girlfriend left a bar in the Verulam CBD and were on their way home to Canelands when they were accosted by an Indian male who began swearing at them.

An altercation broke out between both men when a second suspect who was armed with a shotgun appeared and shot the victim in the back without warning.

Both suspects fled the scene on foot. Paramedics stabilised the victim on the scene before transporting him to hospital in a stable condition.

Reaction officers conducted an extensive search for the suspects, however no arrests were made.
