A 44-year-old man was arrested by members of Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) for allegedly sexually assaulting his 22-year-old stepdaughter at her home in the Chubbies Garage area in Verulam last Tuesday.

Reaction officers were called out to the home after the suspect fled the property in his vehicle.

On arrival it was established that the foreign national had been living in an outbuilding on the property since he separated from his wife.

At approximately 4 am on the day of the incident he entered the main building under the pretext of using the toilet. He then entered his stepdaughter’s room while she was asleep and assaulted her. Upon waking, the victim started screaming and the suspect fled.

Reaction officers conducted an extensive search for the suspect and found him asleep in his vehicle at a service station on Inanda Road in Verulam. Officers kept observation over the vehicle before they approached the man and placed him under arrest.

According to the victim, the suspect had also sexually assaulted her when she was five years old. She informed her mother of the incident however no charges were laid against her stepfather. Her older sister also complained that he had tried to force himself onto her while she was in high school.

Their mother confirmed that both girls had complained to her regarding their stepfather’s actions. She failed to report the incidents to authorities because she feared for her safety due to her husband being extremely violent.

He is currently detained at the Verulam SAPS and a case of sexual assault has been registered against him.


An armed robbery suspect opened fire on reaction officers during a foot chase in Canelands, Verulam last Wednesday.

At approximately 1.58 pm members of Rusa were called out to a block manufacturing company on Old Main Road in the vicinity of the Canelands Library after receiving reports of an armed robbery.

Upon arrival it was established that three suspects had entered the premises and held up the owner and two other individuals. One suspect was armed with a firearm while his accomplices were armed with knives.

They robbed the victims of an undisclosed amount of cash and their cellphones before they fled the scene on foot.

Reaction officers obtained a clothing description of the suspects and went in search of them.

While on patrol, they noticed the robbers fleeing along a railway line in the Canelands area. Officers abandoned their response vehicle and pursued the suspects on foot.

During the foot chase one suspect opened fire on reaction officers, who returned fire.

The suspects then entered an informal settlement where officers lost sight of them. Several back up officers converged at the scene and an extensive search was conducted however the robbers were not located.

Reaction officers were not injured during the shooting.


The driver of a Toyota Tazz abandoned his vehicle shortly after it crashed through a boundary wall on Russom Street in Verulam during the early hours of last Saturday morning.

At approximately 12.02 am members of Rusa were called out to the residence following the incident. Upon arrival it was established that the driver had fled the scene. The Toyota Tazz was extensively damaged in the accident. The occupants of the home were not injured.


A two bedroom outbuilding was extensively damaged during a fire on Primrose Drive in Southridge, Verulam last Saturday.

At approximately 11.58 am members of Rusa were called out to the scene after receiving multiple calls from residents in the area reporting smoke emanating from the premises. Upon arrival reaction officers found the outbuilding at the rear of the property on fire.

Two men who live in the house were attempting to extinguish the blaze with buckets of water. Firemen from the Ethekwini Fire and Rescue Services arrived a short while later and extinguished the fire.

It is alleged that the fire started due to a faulty electrical connection however this could not be confirmed. No one was injured in the fire.


A man was killed in a hit and run accident on the south bound lane of the R102 in the vicinity of the Canelands intersection in Verulam during the early hours of Sunday morning.

At approximately 2.44 am members of Rusa were called out to the scene by a member of public reporting an injured man lying on the road side. Upon arrival medics assessed the individual and found that he had sustained life threatening injuries and died at the scene.

The vehicle involved in the accident fled however a grill and number plate belonging to an Opel Kadette was found at the scene. The deceased’s identity was not established at the time of the incident. Police are investigating further.


At approximately 7.12 am on Monday members of Rusa were called out to Charles Street in Mt. Moreland after a resident found an elderly man lying on the roadside.

On arrival the man, believed to be in his late sixties or early seventies, was found lying partially on the road. He showed no signs of life and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

It is alleged that the deceased worked in the area as a gardener. He has been identified and his next of kin have been informed. He is suspected to have died of natural causes however this will only confirmed once a post mortem is conducted.
