THE 1860 Indentured Labourers Foundation, Verulam commemorated the 10th anniversary of its establishment and the Centenary of the birth of Nelson Mandela by arranging a conference on indenture with the theme “From Indenture to Mandela and Freedom”.

The conference was preceded by a launch dinner which was held at Coastlands, Umhlanga on November 16.

November 15 marked the 158th anniversary of the arrival of S.S. Truro which brought the first shipload of Indentured Labourers from India to the shores of KwaZulu-Natal. Guests of honour were the Minister of Public Enterprises, Pravin Gordhan and eThekwini deputy mayor Fawzia Peer.

Peer officially launched the commemorative brochure of the foundation “Girmit-Sustaining the Legacy”. Peer gave an incisive summary of its contents, a brief outline of the role played by the indentured labourers and their descendants in the progress and development of South Africa as well as the challenges facing eThekwini Municipality.

Gordhan outlined some of the critical events and stalwarts involved in the process of liberating South Africa from the tyranny of apartheid, the challenges facing South Africa and the monumental task of rooting out corruption.
