THE 1860 Indentured Labourers Foundation Verulam is bringing ‘God gave me this life’ to the Verulam Day Care Centre on Sunday, 15 November.

The one-man play features Pranesh Maharaj and was written and directed by Verulam’s own, Vivian Moodley.

Previously the play was only featured in Hindi, but due to public requests the play has also been adapted to English.

The play is set in 1980 and sees an old man, Mr Balram, reminisce of his life with funny, emotional, sensual and entertaining scenes.

“Our past is not very far away from us and many of us will remember the era of living in wooden houses,” said Maharaj.

“This is also a very important era in our history because this is showing the South African Indian identity and around 1980 we start seeing the idea of this.”

In the play Maharaj takes on around 20 different character personas as he tells the story of Balram’s life and the people who were a part of it along the way.

“He recollects, with much jest, his family, neighbours, his in-laws engagement, marriage, child and even the neighbour’s dog,” said Maharaj.

“There is something for everyone to relate to and people are going to love this play whether they are young or old. It also gives a chance to glimpse what life was like back then.”

The play has already featured in Hindi at the Catalina theatre and in various communities and the witty script, acting and stage has already blown audiences away.

“We have tried to bring a true theatre experience to the communities and they will see this when they look at the stage and play,” said Maharaj.

The play takes place on Sunday, 13 November at 4pm. To book tickets contact Roy on 0745850181 or 0325331752.
