THE eagerly-awaited outdoor gym facility for the Dawncrest residents has finally opened to the public. The facility was opened on May 19 after numerous attempts were made to eThekwini Municipality to get the facility up and running.

Chairperson of the Dawncrest Civic Association Nova Chetty said that they made an application to the municipality to build an outdoor gym facility four years ago.

“We made a request to the municipality after we noticed that many townships have such facilities for the residents. I am glad that the community has taken ownership of this facility and we hope no vandalism will take place. Since the infrastructure was installed, the community including children are using it for good reasons. I would also like to thank ward councillor for pushing this project forward for us,” Chetty said.

Ward councillor Johnson Chetty said: “Too many people are suffering from curable diseases like obesity and hypertension. To maintain a healthy lifestyle, it is imperative that we exercise. To this end, we need to applaud the initiative of eThekwini Municipality parks and recreation department,” Chetty said.

Chetty said that the council took a decision to roll out the concept of outdoor gymnasiums throughout the impoverished communities.

“This facility is ideal for people to exercise at their own time and pace within the suburb they live. And it’s totally free I encourage all residents to utilise these facilities regularly and to ensure that they are cared for,” Chetty said.
