ONE of the most significant festivals in Indian culture is Diwali which sees millions attend firework displays, prayers and celebratory events across the world.

Members of the Rotaract Club of Verulam believe that many homes are unable to celebrate this occasion due to poverty and unfavourable conditions.

Club members assisted 21 indigent families for this year’s Diwali project.

The project was one of their larger projects and gives the club great joy to be able to provide sustenance for families, especially for the festival of Diwali.

The club handed out 21 hampers that contained groceries, household items, toiletries, fireworks and Eastern clothing for families in the Verulam, Tongaat and Phoenix areas on October 1.

In a media statement the club said: “Our aim was to ensure that the recipients of these hampers have a blessed and joyous Diwali. These hampers also served as a source of food that these families will use to sustain themselves. We would like to thank all our generous sponsors for their kind donations. Your generosity has extended our hands in reaching the community and with your assistance, this project was a success. Our club would like to wish everyone a blessed and joyous Diwali.”
