MORE than 250 African wheelchair basketball champions are competing at the Tongaat Indoor Sports Centre in the 2017 IWBF Afro World Wheelchair Basketball Championship Qualifying Tournament.

The players are competing “to secure the only African slot for the 2018 World Wheelchair Basketball Championships for men and women that will take place in Hamburg, Germany in August next year”.

Seven men’s teams and four women’s teams from Angola, Algeria, Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, South Africa and Zimbabwe are participating in the games.

The SA men’s team defeated Kenya 134-18 on Monday, November 20. Head of marketing and communications for Wheelchair Basketball South Africa Gerry Smith said in a statement: “We are delighted to be afforded the opportunity to host the 7th International Wheelchair Basketball Federations Afro World Championship Qualifiers Afro Men and Women.

“We have identified Durban as our preferred destination for wheelchair basketball and our strategy is to host the World Wheelchair Basketball Championships in 2022 and this event will give us the opportunity to showcase to the International Wheelchair B Basketball community that Durban is a world-class destination for people with disabilities.”
