THE Kumari Veloshani Manicum Dance Academy (KVMDA) recently left for Dubai to perform in India’s International Groovefest, which is an international dance competition that showcases 200 teams from around the world.

KVMDA, which is a local academy from Phoenix, scooped first prize in the semi-classical group category. The competition was held on November 16 in Dubai and the day also happens to be the anniversary of the first arrival of Indians to South Africa.

The competition win has opened the doors to international stage performances for the academy and most importantly, for South Africa.

The team was filled with emotion when they performed to the famous Waka Waka song, as this represented South Africa on an international stage.

The team consisted of Kumari Veloshani Manicum (choreographer), Valentia Pillay (student), Maxine Murugan (student) and Divenita Govender (student).
