THE cause of a blaze that destroyed a storeroom at Buffelsdale Primary on October 26 remains unknown.

The room housed old school furniture for recycling.

The fire broke out in the morning and pupils and teachers were evacuated from the classrooms to the school grounds.

According to school management pupils and teachers were not injured.

“There were no injuries or casualties. The fire broke out in our storeroom where we keep our old furniture for recycling. “I hope the SAPS and fire crew will be able to give us a report­ about the cause of the fire,” a representative said.

The incident has raised parents’ fear about the safety of their children at the school.

A parent, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “The management of the school must investigate the cause of the fire.

“As parents we fear for the safety of our children. Are the children safe at schools?”

SAPS Tongaat spokesperson Captain Patrick Ngwane said the police received a report and attended to the incident.


“There was no case opened and the cause of the fire was not clear. Warrant Officer Narainsamy attended and when he arrived at the scene the room was engulfed into flames. According to the principal there was no foul play suspected.”

eThekwini fire crew and other emergency services were called to extinguish the blaze. However, the building was already engulfed into flames. Division Commander for uMhlanga fire station Jesse Yasadus said: “The cause of the fire was not determined. When our crew arrived at the scene at about 8.38am the building was on fire. Water tankers were used to extinguish the fire. By 9.50am our crew they were on their way back to the station. No injuries were reported.”
