MORE than 50 residents gathered at the Oliver Reginald Tambo Memorial Hall in Umbhayi for a service delivery meeting on Saturday, November 4.
Members of Parliament and ward councillors visited informal settlements in Verulam and Tongaat to get first-hand experiences from the informal settlements residents.
At a meeting, residents from Magwaveni complained about the service delivery and power outages that, they say, have been going on for the past two years.

Sibusisio Magwaza (41) was a resident who complained about power cuts in the area.

“Last month Magwaveni residents took to the streets complaining about power outages. We barricaded roads with burning tyres and demanded answers from the leaders.”

Magwaza said they constantly experience power outages in Magwaveni and no one gives them an explanation.

“We pay for electricity [prepaid] every month. Our councillors must explain to us.”

Some residents accused politicians of making empty promises when canvassing for votes.

Ward councillor Dolly Munien said eThekwini Municipality was working on these issues raised by the residents.

“We are doing our best to give the service to the community. We always appeal to the residents to be patient.”

Among the leaders attending the meeting were DA provincial leader Zwakele Mncwango, north central constituency head Tim Brauteseth and ward councillors.
