A STORE owned by a foreigner was completely destroyed after fire broke out inside the shop on Moss Street, Verulam at the weekend.

Head of Reaction Unit, Prem Balaram said members of Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) were on patrol on Moss Street when they noticed smoke rising from the top of a closed roller shutter door.

“Reaction officers closed off the road, concerned that the fire would spread to an attached hardware store that stored paint and other flammables,” said Balaram.

The eThekwini Fire department responded to the fire and extinguished the blaze.

Verulam SAPS communications officer Mark Prakasim said the store unfortunately was completely burnt.

Police have ruled out foul play as the cause of the fire.

“It seems that the fire was caused by an electrical fault, but we are awaiting the report from the fire department,” said Prakasim.

Prakasim confirmed there were no injuries at the time of the fire as the store was closed.
