Talking teeth — pulp capping

PULP CAPPING — WHAT IS THE PULP OF A TOOTH?

The pulp of a tooth is simply the area of the tooth where the nerve lies.

Pulp capping is an affordable procedure done to prevent expensive root canal and crown treatment or the loss of a tooth.

During the procedure, the decay is removed as far as possible without intruding into the nerve space, thereafter a medicated liner called calcium hydroxide is placed over the nerve. This liner protects the nerve from heat, cold and bacteria.

A therapeutic filling is placed over this liner and its left in for six weeks or longer. During this time, the liner assists the tooth in the formation of a protective barrier between the nerve and cavity, called secondary dentine. After six weeks, the therapeutic filling is replaced with a tooth coloured filling.

This procedure has limitations and a consultation is required to determine if the tooth is a candidate.

Cant afford root canal but still want to save your tooth? Then pulp capping may be an option for you.
