AS spiritual seekers and devotees throughout the world are eagerly waiting to pay homage and worship Lord Shiva on the auspicious and holy night of Shivarathri through a whole night vigil on February 13, the Tongaat Hindu Unity Forum went into gear with a 10-day awareness campaign for the big night.

Residents gathered at the Nelson Mandela Square in Tongaat despite the rainy weather, to partake in the cultural and spiritual feast dished out on Saturday.

Supported by the affiliates and the Tongaat branch of Iskcon, the message of unity and collective prayer during these challenging times echoed through the town.

Chairperson of the forum, brother Vedananda, encouraged the community to attend the awareness programme which is at the Tongaat Sabha in Railway Street from February 4 to 12, from 6.30 am to 8 pm.

The discourses are delivered by highly respected matajis and swamijis (Mataji Baiji of Manav Dharma Ashram, Swami Abedhananda of Chinmaya Mission and Swami Swatmaramananda of Ramakrishna Centre of South Africa).

Supper will be served daily and devotees have an opportunity to engage with these eminent spiritual leaders to clear their doubts and enhance their thirst for the spiritual truths. The programme was concluded at the Nelson Mandela Square.

Mahashivaratri will be observed for the whole night on February 13 by the following organisations throughout Tongaat:

Isenembe Shri Veeraboga Vasantharayar Temple, Sandfields Siva Subramanier Temple, Shree Veeraboga Emperumal Temple, Tongaat Sabha in Railway Street, Klipfontein Shree Emperumal Temple, Divine Life Society at the Sivananda Cultural Centre La Mercy, Seatides Sai Centre, Vedanta Institute of South Africa (Genazanno Seatides), Brake Village Sri Siva Soobramaniar Alayam, Vishwaroop Temple and Dharmshala, Preshanti Niketan in Mitchell Village, Tongaat South Vishnu Temple, Flamingo Amman Temple, Chinna Thirupathi Venkataswara Devasthanam and the Mariamman Dhuruga Temple on Saunders Circle Belvedere.
