SWIFT response by detectives from the Provincial Taxi Task Team and KwaDukuza SAPS led to the arrest of three suspects for a double murder and attempted murder on Tuesday, October 23. It is alleged that on October 22, three armed suspects entered the place of residence of Mlungisi Maphumulo (27), a taxi driver from Verulam, and fatally shot him. The suspects then fled the scene in their getaway vehicle. A case of murder was opened at Verulam police station. According to SAPS provincial spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane: “In the early hours of October 23, two men believed to be involved in the murder of a taxi driver in Verulam were allegedly shot dead by [three] unknown suspects while travelling in their blue Toyota Condor on the N2 freeway, just after the KwaDukuza turn-off. An intensive investigation was conducted and three suspects were quickly arrested. The members confiscated the suspect’s three licensed firearms with 45 rounds of ammunition.” All three suspects appeared in the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court on October 24 and were each granted bail of R1 500. Their case was remanded to January 10, 2019.
