TONGAAT resident, Lavisha Bhagwandin (LB) will represent KwaZulu-Natal in the Miss Eagle South Africa pageant in Johannesburg next year.

Coastal Weekly journalist Andile Sithole (AS) interviewed her about her community outreach programmes.

AS: What did you want to become when you were a child?

LB: I always wanted to become a doctor, but growing older I began developing haemophobia (fear of blood). I then selected my second option of becoming a chartered accountant and I am currently on my journey to becoming a chartered accountant.

AS: You matriculated from Tongaat Secondary, and pursued a degree in accounting at University of KZN, tell us about your education.

LB: I believe education plays a vital role in ones life and I am currently completing my honours at Unisa in order to achieve my dream of becoming a chartered accountant.

AS: What motivated you become a model?

LB: I always admired models on television and envisioned myself as one. It’s a natural passion that comes from within.

The whole preparation before modelling, the hair and makeup, the different outfits that we wear whilst being on stage, it is all an overwhelming feeling that I truly enjoy.

AS: Who or what is your source of inspiration?

LB: My source of inspiration other than my beloved parents would definitely be our legendary icon Nelson Mandela.

Despite all his struggles and setbacks in his life he never lost focus.

He stood up for what he believed in. He is an icon of change, strength, good morals and leadership qualities.

AS: When did you start getting involved in community works?

LB: I began doing charity work from 2009. It is an unexplainable feeling when you see someone smile and you know you brought about that smile. I believe service to mankind is service to God.

In whatever form, big or small charity would definitely make a difference in the less fortunate lives. Charity is embedded in my soul. I love helping others.

AS: How do you feel about being a woman from Tongaat representing KZN in the Miss Eagle South Africa pageant?

LB: I am honoured being a Tongaat woman to represent KZN in the first ever Miss Eagle South Africa contest. I have a remarkable opportunity to be the change I want to see in my community and to help various organisations in and around Tongaat.

I will certainly do my best to make my community as well as my province proud and to be a role model to the younger generation.
