A TONGAAT young karateka will represent South African universities in the World Karate Student Games taking place in Portugal tomorrow (12 August).

Yashveer Jugoo, a first year student from the University of Technology (DUT) together with other Skisa karate superstars will lock horns with highly acclaimed karatekas coming from various universities around the world.

The three-day event is expected to attract more than 1000 university students around the world competing in the championships.

Speaking to the Weekly early this week, Jugoo said that he was over the moon and felt honoured to be among university students to represent South African flag overseas.

“Representing South Africa in karate is a feeling I cannot explain. It’s out of this world. My achievements are all thanks to my Coach Sensei Brando Pillay.

The young people who want to persue karate must never give up, because perseverance is key to success. They must follow their dreams,” he said.

Jugoo added that karate is the second biggest sport in the world.

“Karate keeps you discipline and healthy,” he said.

The event is a bi-annual student games held under the banner of the World Karate Federation.

Head coach for Skisa Brando Pillay said Jagoo and other team members were fighting fit and in a peak form.

“I expect our USSA team to bring gold medals with world student titles,” he said.
