WITH just five days to go until the 91st Comrades Marathon kicks off, a cohort of 26 Tongaat Panthers Athletics Club will be running what is arguably the world’s greatest ultra-marathon.

The Tongaat Panthers, who will be at the start-line in Pietermaritzburg at 5.30am alongside the 20,000 other hardcore runners from all over the world, have been training hard for months in anticipation of this historic day in the field of athletics and human endurance.

Club member Keshini Maharaj said after about a year of training, all Panthers runners are declared fit and ready to tackle this ‘ultimate race’.

“The Panthers taking on the Comrades took part in the Chairman’s Run last Sunday and after competing, said they were ready to tackle the race. Some are recovering from injuries and the flu, but a positive mindset prevailed among the runners.

“We would all like to wish them the best this Sunday,” said Maharaj, who added that the club’s ‘Aches and Pains Party’ will be held at Victoria Primary School on Saturday, 4 June.
