VICTORIA Primary School in Tongaat received four additional classrooms and two bathrooms to accommodate the high number of pupils enrolling at the school every year.

Dignitaries, parents, members of the Divine Life Society of South Africa and teachers converged at the school for the official opening ceremony.

School principal Lajeeth Maharaj confirmed that for many years the number of pupils enrolling at the school increased rapidly and posed a challenge to the management of the school.

Lajeeth thanked the Divine Life Society of South Africa for making it possible for the pupils to have a conducive learning environment.
Co-chairperson of the Divine Life Society of South Africa Dr Mawalall Chatrooghoon said: “We are currently focusing on building crèches in rural areas.

“We are also looking at building more old age homes to assist the people in need. We have completed 600 projects and we look forward to building more in the community.”
Speaking at the event, Billy Nair Circuit education manager Selvan Chetty said he was reminded of the forefathers who came to this country in 1860.
“And when they came they focused on three aspects of life that they believed were fundamentally important. And those aspects were religion, education and culture. When I drove in my car this morning I realised that this programme kind of optimises of all aspects of what our forefathers brought for us with them.

“Today I want to say that I have the greatest amount of respect and will continue to be eternally grateful for their bravery, courage, and hard work and for giving us this opportunity of being able to do the things that we do today to better the lives our children. Victoria Primary is certainly a story of what Martin Luther king dreamt about and believed in.

“Over the years we have seen the school escalate to great heights. Ten years ago when Maharaj [school principal] was appointed to the school he too had a dream and from all that has been mentioned about the successes of the school, one would have realised that the best thing that could have happened to this best institution was his appointment.”

Last year the Divine Life Society conducted a sod turning ceremony at the school on 17 August.
