A MAN (45) charged with the murder of a Phoenix mother and her two daughters appeared at the Verulam Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, September 25 to apply for bail.

The suspect, whose name is being withheld until he pleads, is charged with three counts of murder.

Residents and leaders of political parties protested outside the court, chanting “no bail”.

DA councilor Geoff Pullan said: “I attended the hearing, but only a few were allowed into court.

“Everyone is absolutely shocked at the triple murder. There seems to be no logical explanation why anyone would do this. My sympathies to those three victims,” he said.

The victims were identified as Jane, Denisha, and Rackelle Govender.

According to the police the suspect is known to the family however, the husband of the deceased was quoted in the media as saying the suspect is not known to the family.

On September 21, Phoenix police responded to a report of murder at Longcroft Drive in Phoenix.

On arrival they found two bodies inside the house.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said in a statement: “While police were still busy with their investigation, combing the scene, they found the third body in a cupboard. She was identified as the second daughter.

“Three counts of murder were opened at Phoenix police station and investigations are ongoing,” Zwane said. The suspect will remain in custody while he awaits his next appearance in court.
