TRUBEL Primary School teacher Preetha Kumari Balay has served in the Department of Education for over 35 years and she retired from the school last month.

Born and raised in the Clare Estate area in the Satyenda family, she completed her primary school education at Essendene and S.M. Javary Schools and finished her matric at Clare Hills Secondary.

In 1981 she completed her teacher’s diploma at the Springfield College of Education and was posted to Natest Primary in Mount Edgecombe.

In 1985 she was transferred to Trubel Primary School where she remained until her retirement.

In 1988 she successfully completed her Diploma in Special Education for Mentally Handicapped Children.

Balay acted as head of department in the Foundation Phase in 2009 and has made a big difference to the pupils’ lives ever since.

At her farewell function principal Mr. G. Ramcharan was full of praises of not just her teaching ability, but the extra mile she went to make the lives of others a little more significant and comfortable.

“We have spent almost 30 years teaching in the same institution and I have seen Mrs. Balay grow from a young, enthusiastic and passionate teacher to one who guided and provided parental care to all,” said Ramcharan.

As a top sports girl in her school days, Balay continued to coach and promote sport at Trubel as well.

“The fact that she taught the special class for so many years is indicative of her passion to teaching children. Special education pupils rarely go back to normal stream education, but with the guidance and coaching of Mrs. Balay, many of them are now accomplished businessman,” added Ramcharan.

Balay has given yeomen service to Trubel and her colleagues were sad to say farewell.

Long standing colleague and peer of more than three decades, Mrs. N. Padayachee spoke of nostalgic moments and said that she will always be remembered fondly for her genuine concern for children.

“I’ve always admired her resilience and incredible spirit in facing the numerous challenges that education brought to us in the last three decades.

“You certainly are a woman of substance and I will forever cherish those adventurous fun times we shared in our younger days,” said Mrs. Padayachee.

School governing body chairperson Mrs. Daphne Govender thanked Balay for her almost three decades at Trubel.

“You leave behind a great legacy of total commitment to teaching and learning. Your example is indeed a fine one for up and coming educators to emulate. We want to wish you well in your retirement and trust that God Almighty will always bless you with good health.”

On behalf of the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education, the superintendent of education Mr. S. A. Chetty thanked Balay for her long, committed and outstanding service to Education.

“The strength of our teachers is the hallmark of the Billy Nair Circuit. The Department of Education would like to wish Mrs. Balay everything of the best in her retirement.”

Balay thanked all those who played a pivotal role in her development and growth.
