VERULAM Athletic club (VAC) will be holding the 14th Gaterite 5 in 1 Challenge on 20 March at the Verulam Recreation Grounds.

The landmark event in the KZN North Coast, anchored by Gaterite, has become a must for many runners both within and outside of KZN.

Known for its slick organisation, VAC has consistently put on the Comrades Marathon 42.2km qualifier, 21.1km half marathon and 10km run and walk for many years.

The famous charity run incorporating a 2km and 5km charity community responsibility event that generates funds for welfare and school organisations completes an important weekend on the KZN athletic calendar.

The race event is also part of the Human Rights Day celebrations and the long weekend after school closure brings an added dimension to promoting a healthy lifestyle and Autism Month later in April.

The charity run is a legacy of VAC in giving back to schools and youth as well as all other age groups initiated 14 years ago and has resulted in thousands of rands being generated for local schools and continues to be a valued social responsibility project embraced by most schools in Verulam and the surrounding areas.

As in the past, schools from the KwaDuzuza, Stanger and surrounding areas have travelled to Verulam to be a part of this wonderful concept.

Online and pre-race entries are now available on www.eventtiming as well as entry boxes placed at KZN Athletics and Durban runner in Glenwood.

Group entries can also be lodged with Anand Naidoo at Mounthaven Primary School and options are also available for local clubs with a pick and drop opportunity that is available according to race organisers, Anand Naicker and Velvan Nair.

All 10km, 21.1km and 42.2km participants will receive a special edition Gaterite race t-shirt, while the 42.2km runners will also receive medals.

The charity fun run – both 2km and 5km finishers - will also receive medals and a goody bag.

Participants are also advised that they may purchase fun run entries prior to race start.

The group purchases for events have also commenced with companies enquiring and committing to promote a healthy lifestyle amongst its staff.

Another initiative that VAC has promoted in its 15th anniversary year is the piggy backing and capacity building of clubs that want to experience race organisation and develop themselves into hosting races.

Bobby Ramlagan said this is an initiative in allowing for greater co-operation, not only in participation support, but sharing organisational excellence with fellow clubs and organisations. “This partnership has been shared with local organisations as well,” said Ramlagan.

Any organisation still interested in using the charity fun run to fundraise or for more information contact Anand Naicker on 0837836363.
