UTHONGATHI Football Club “Cane Cutters” earned three points after beating Jomo Cosmos 1-0 at Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu on January 21.

The team played their first game under the leadership of new coach Samuel Troughton and his assistant Jonny Ferreira. The goal scorer was Siyabonga Vilane.

Former couch Ronnie Gabriel and assistant Pitso Dladla were released from duty on December 13, 2017.

Club spokesperson Jackson Mojapelo said the club executive called a special meeting and released Gabriel and Dladla after the club lost 2-0 to Witbank Spurs.

“The decision was made based on the results and performance of the team.

“It was not an easy decision to make as we have been working with them for so many years,” Mojapelo said.

Under Gabriel and Pitso’s wings, Cane Cutters became the champions of the ABC Motsepe League last year after defeating Super Eagles 1-0 in the finals.

Troughton has previously coached Thanda Royal Zulu, University of Pretoria and Stellenbosch FC.

“He comes with vast experience in football and we would like to encourage our soccer fans to come in numbers to support the new coach and the team,” Mojapelo said.

Mojapelo said the club’s last victory was in December last year when they locked horns with Real Kings at King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi.

“The club was 13 on the log with 17 points from 17 games.

“We couldn’t wait for the club to become number 16 on the log until we made changes.

“The announcement was made on Monday, [January 15] after a three-hour meeting on Sunday.

The club also signed experienced players Lucky Mzizi, Patrick Meso, Sibusiso Magaqa and Philani Shange, to inject new blood and improve team performance.
