VAC athletes do well in PVAC run

THE Verulam Athletic Club participated in a weekend of racing with Saturday’s time trials coupled with Sunday’s PVAC 10km and half marathon in Mount Edgecombe recently.

In addition, a trio of runners took to the streets and suburbs of Soweto contributing to an eventful weekend for VAC runners and walkers.

Vukani Maphumulo led team VAC in the 10km in 37 minutes, where he maintained third position overall from start to finish.

Velvan Nair eased through the tree-lined golf estate, before meandering into the industrial area before a fast finishing sub-1:51 finish at the temple grounds in Siphosethu Road.

Jace Moodley once again confounded the critics with a 1:04 finish ahead of another consistent finisher Ben Padayachee, who improves steadily each week.

Ricardo Nair and Beena Maharaj showed much improvement in 1:10. Sarah Naidoo cruised through in 1:18 behind Shirley Narainsamy taking a break from previous week’s half marathon. Walker Ronnie Rangasamy eased through comfortably taking in the reverse route and Cornubia Complex in 1:22 ahead of Sundree Ramlagana and Atom Dilraj, also making a return after a prolonged absence in 1:24.

Rose Amina came second in the walk in 1:40 ahead of Reema Harripersad in her novice race in 1:50.

Aariya Harripersad succumbed to her injuries early in the race and “vowed to return fit again for the next 10km challenge”.Anand Naidoo and Anitha Sewnarain were two minutes apart in the half marathon in 2:12 and 2:14 respectively, while Alan Govender eased through with his son Lavell Govender in 2:36.VAC also took to the streets of Soweto with three members making their debut in the Soweto half marathon and 10km run.

Udeshan Phillip posted a 2:47 finish ahead of Dasen Naidoo in 3:50 in the 21.1km half marathon, while Amith Samsunder eased through in 1:17 in the 10km. - Supplied.
