VERULAM Athletic Club commenced its 2017 athletic season with consecutive Day Lee Challenges and Airport Runs last Saturday and Sundays respectively. The Saturday 4km and 8km Time Trial Challenge and Sunday saw a revamped Airport Run which incorporated staggered distances of 5km, 10km 12km and 15km. Comrades and Two Oceans runners also enjoy extended runs of 21km, 30km and 35km on weekends. Busisiwe Msomi, Zama Ngobese, Vasie Moodley, Nokuthula Langa, Neesan Rajman, Mala Suriah, Eddie Suriah and Hemraj Samlall made their debut at the VAC Time Trial and Airport Run last weekend.Vukani Maphumulo led team VAC in the 15km run showing early pace and form in a fluent 53 minutes ahead of Thabiso Mohale and Walter Mthembu affectionately known as the ‘VAC green mambas’. “All three have put in tremendous amount of pre-season training and have already qualified for the Comrades Marathon later this year and have commenced the season with determination,” said club coach Anand Naicker, after watching them claim fast finishes just two weeks into club runs this year. Velvan Nair, Anand Naidoo and Marlene Pillay came through in moderate runs closely followed by Udeshan Phillip and Raeesa Bayat in a sub two hour 1.56. Siyanda Makhanya, former silver medalist shrugged off the rust of a lengthy layoff with a 2.04 after novice Nokuthula Langa, in her debut Airport 15km Challenge. Krish Naidoo, Praviun Sewnarain, Anita Sewnarain and Allan Govender continued their quest towards Two Oceans Ultra Marathon later this Easter with long runs of 22km.Ronnie Rangasamy, Premilla Harripersadh, Ben Padayachee, Rajesh Ramdhularie, Tharushka and Pam Sookoo completed the 15km Challenge. Another novice Zama Ngobese led the 10km run in1.20 ahead of veteran Johnny Karanjoo in 1.30 Smiley Naidoo walked in 1.33 ahead of another returning novice in the Airport Challenge Vasie Moodley in 1.46.Vishnu Moodley and Queenie Naidoo finished in tandem in 1.55 a minute ahead of Feroza Luckan and Anand Naicker marking their return after the festive season with a pleasing 1.58.Shirley Narainsamy together with training comrade Beena Maharaj posted a 1.36 finish in the 12km edition ahead of Bobby Ramlagan and Dawood Bayat in 1.59.The shorter edition of 5km saw a revitalised Shavie Karanjoo ease through in 40 minutes ahead of Pam Zwane, eight minutes later. Another novice Busisiwe Msomi completed a sub one hour 57 minutes run, whilst Ameetha Singh, Joey Chetty and Juanita Deenanath enjoyed the Sunday morning walk in 1.14. Club chairman Bobby Ramlagan said the early response for both the Day Lee 4km and 8km challenge on Saturday and the 5,10,12 and 15km Airport Run on Sundays that is open free to the public at no obligation was outstanding. This coming weekend continues with the weekend double with the Day Lee Challenge on Saturday and Airport Challenge on Sunday – both commence at 5am. The Day Lee Challenge incorporates the Parkgate / Ottawa route whilst the Airport Run incorporates the R 102 Airport Route.
