THE Verulam Athletics Club, on behalf of Lower Tugela Lifeskills, will host the 1860 Indentured 10km and 5km Challenge at the Amphitheatre in North Beach, Durban.

With a 7am start, runners and walkers will be able to take up the fast and flat promenade with the Indian Ocean on either side. Running along the picturesque beachfront, runners and walkers will be able to sample Durban’s best and fastest 10km route, which also allows for personal bests, on September 24.

The race commemorates the arrival of the 1860 indentured labourers and, as part of social cohesion, also aligns with the Nelson Mandela centenary commemoration. In a symbolic start at the Amphitheatre, the race route takes a southerly direction towards uShaka Marine World, not far from the first landing of the ships that brought in the first group of indentured labourers. The runners and walkers then turn north.

An additional feature this year is that late registration and race number and t-shirt collection can be done at Kings Park Athletic Stadium on Sunday, September 23, from 11 am to 5 pm.

Entry points include Asmalls Hypersave (Verulam), Bhagwans (Tongaat), Sportszone in Durban North, STS Sport at Moses Mabhida and Durban Runner (Glenwood).

Entry boxes will be available until September 20.

Online entry closes on September 18. A late entry option is also available on Sunday at Kings Park Stadium and on race day from 6 am to 7 am.
