VERULAM Athletic Club members embarked on a weekend treble with the Day Lee Challenge, Airport Run and the energy sapping Hillcrest Marathon.
With the soaring temperatures welcoming the early Comrades and Two Oceans Ultra qualifiers, runners took to the hydration tables at every station.
Vukani Maphumulo led team VAC in the marathon with a superb 3.13 finish, pronouncing himself satisfied with his preparation for the ultra double Two Oceans and Comrades this year.
Elated novice Enoch Menzi, in Verulam Athletic Club colours posted an incredible in 3.28 and booked his place in the Comrades marathon this year.
Pravin Sewnarain also qualified in a moderate 4.07 saying: “I am where I expected to be at this time of the training.” Anita Sewnarain, who is going for her third consecutive Comrades medal, eased through in 4.41, despite an injury lay off, easily qualifying with nineteen minutes to spare.
Alan Govender and Andrew Dlamini succumbed to injury and the heat, but the experience in these conditions serve as a useful preparation for the ultra season ahead.

Two Oceans bound Krish Naidoo posted a 1.49 half marathon, declaring himself ready for the Cape ultra season, ahead of Paul Mthetwa, who continues to impress in 2.08.
Sundree Ramlagan, graduated back to runner status this year finishing in 2.38 ahead of mother and daughter duo Pam and Tharushka sookoo in 3.07.
Dasen Naidoo, a regular at the races, finished in 3.44.

Preparations for the Gaterite 15th Anniversary Challenge incorporating the 42.2km, 21.1km, 10km, 5km and 2km Human Rights Commemoration 5-in-1 Challenge takes place on 26 March at Verulam Recreation Ground. Organisations interested in fundraising with no costs are welcome to contact VAC for their fundraising opportunities and persons or organisations interested in being part of this national race event as well as community race may contact the club on 083 783 6363.
VAC will hold their annual general meeting on Saturday, 25 February at 2pm at Mounthaven Primary School.
KZNA licences and club registration available. Those wanting to retain their 2016 licence numbers are urged to register to ensure they retain the same race numbers. - Supplied.
