THE Verulam Athletic club commenced its weekend double winter runs with the Comrades runners making a fresh start after the gruelling up run earlier this month.

Leading VAC novice finisher Thabiso Mohale showed a clean pair of heels with a fast 1.15 finish in the 15km Airport Run ahead of another Comrades double back to back finisher Walter Mthembu in 1.23 followed by his better half Ntombi Fire in 1.28.

Ntombi Fire is poised for 2018 Comrades and is well on track for her novice attempt next year.

Middle distance veteran Anand Naidoo ran a consistent 1.28 ahead of emerging runner Ben Padayachee who clipped off a stunning 15 minutes off his time in 1.42, with Velvan Nair. Smiley Naidoo led the 15km walk in 2.07. New comer Ayanda Dladla led the 12km in his quest for 2018 Comrades down run pronounced himself satisfied after consecutive weekend runs amongst Comrades runners soaking up the advice of his comrades.

The Saturday 49 minute finish in the 8km coupled with his 12km Sunday Airport run was a good baptism remarking that he is now “hooked on to Comrades 2018”. Anita Sewnarain, VAC’s only female finisher, also soaked up the cold morning with a refreshing run easing in with a 1.31 finish ahead of Rajesh Ramdhularie who continues to improve every week in 1.34 together with Ricardo Nair.

VAC ‘twins’ Shirley Narainsamy and Beena Maharaj came through a minute later, ahead of Pam Zwane with Dolly Shamlall in 1.51.

Ronnie Rangasamy led the 10km in 1.28. Tharushka completed her weekend double in 1.31 with mom Pam Sookoo shrugging off the cold winter spell in 1.34.

Vishnu Moodley led a solo 1.35. Anand Naicker posted a fast 1.42 with Jaya Kisten also following a minute later in 1.43. Queenie Naidoo and a resurgent Joey Chetty completed the 10km in a sub two hour 1.57.

The Saturday 4km and 8km, coupled with the Sunday’s 5km, 10km 12km and 15km Verulam Athletic Club winter runs and walk are providing good opportunities for the novice and established runners and walkers. These events are open to the public and provide a useful opportunity to stay healthy and fit and commences at 6am every weekend.

VAC leader board Comrades finisher Krish Naidoo in a statement: “All social runner and walkers are welcome with no obligation.VAC also invites potential Comrades runners to join both time trials and Airport runs that have provided a useful foundation for the middle distance and ultra runners.” - Supplied.
