VAC supports Mandela Challenge

THE Verulam Athletic club concluded a weekend double with the Saturday challenge and Sundays Mandela Legacy Challenge hosted by Phoenix Villagers Athletics Club recently.

Running in cold conditions and part of the Phoenix Sport Festival, the 10km provided a useful opportunity for runners and walkers to sample a combination of trail running and road running in the 10km. 

Vukani Maphumulo dusted off his recent ailment and posted a credible 38 minute finish, easily capturing first position in the 35+ male category.

Beauty Msomi (15), from Siphesihle Secondary, in her novice attempt in VAC colours was ecstatic in her third position podium finish in the junior females’ category in 1.15.

Grandmaster Jace Moodley, another recently joined VAC member, in his first race in VAC silks eased through in a pleasant 1.16 finish.

Kris Naidoo and Velvan Nair completed sub one-hour 51 minutes and 55 minutes finishes respectively, whilst Anand Naidoo was edged by Pravin Sewnarain and Anita Sewnarain in 1.01 and 1.03 respectively.

VAC veteran walkers Ronnie Rangasamy and Smiley Naidoo posted a 1.20 and 1.22 finish continuing with their walking challenge ahead of Dolly Shamlall in 1.23 and a returning Cynthia Zondi in 1.25 after a two year injury absence. Pam Zwane followed through in an improved 1.26 ahead of Shirley Narainsamy and Beena Maharaj in 1.29. 

Mother and daughter Pam and Tharushka Sookoo eased through in a credible 1.31, whilst ever improving Hemlall Shamlall posted a 1.35 finish.

Anand Naicker, Brenda Peters and Dasen Naidoo enjoyed the banter while cruising through the Gandhi Park, enjoying the trail walk.

Ameetha Singh and Dolly Moodley completed the team VAC finishers in a memorable first 10km Mandela Challenge hosted by Phoenix Villagers.

Members are reminded that this coming Sunday sees the resumption of the 10km Airport Challenge which is followed by the Women’s Day and Autism 10km  North Coast Challenge hosted by KwaDukuza Athletic Club on Wednesday. Verulam Athletic Club together with other local clubs are embarking on a show of solidarity with KwaDukuza Athletic Club who will be hosting a race for the first time in over 10 years in Stanger Manor.
