NINE suspects were arrested in a sting operation by the Verulam SAPS and Metro Police in Verulam on Thursday, November 9.

The suspects were found in possession of drugs, dangerous weapons, arrested for dealing in liquor and for traffic violations.

The arrests were made after SAPS received complaints from the public about people and street vendors selling drugs from their stalls.

Police also confiscated goods from street vendors who did not have trading permits.

Ward councillor Johnson Chetty applauded the swift reaction by the police in arresting the suspects.

SAPS Verulam spokesperson Captain Henry Kisten said the cops will intensify such operations this festive season.

“The police have started to clean up the streets in Verulam ahead of the December holidays.

“We want to ensure that the people are safe this festive season.”

Verualm SAPS Crime Prevention also conducted a road block in Jabu Ngcobo Road and arrested one suspect in possession of a firearm.

The police stopped the suspect’s car and conducted a search.

They found the passenger to be in possession of a 9mm Norinco Pistol and six live rounds.
He was charged for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
In another firearm recovery, Constable Nkomo from the detective branch was investigating a murder case when he arrested a suspect at his home in the Zwelisha area.

The suspect was found in possession of an unlicenced firearm.

Both suspects appeared at the Verulam Magistrate’s Court on Monday, November 13 and a due for a second appearance soon.

“The station commander Brigadier Victor Dludla applauded the members and said firearms are the biggest contributors to our murders.

“He also said that as the festive season is approaching us there will be roadblocks and other intelligence driven operations focusing on firearms, drugs and drunk driving,” Kisten said.
