Verulam rape suspect sentenced to two life terms

A MAN accused of rape and terrorising­ residents in Verulam was sentenced into two life terms for rape and 50 years for other cases at the Verulam Magistrate’s court on 25 August.

Mzwakhe Sithole (27) was convicted and sentenced for three cases of rape, two for robbery and one for house breaking that he committed in Verulam in 2012.

According to the police, Sithole threatened residents in Verulam and raped women between March and September 2012.

KZN police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Shooz Magudulela said in a statement: “From March 2012 until September 2012, the accused was terrorising the community of Verulam where he was targeting women and raped them.

“The first case was reported in March 2012 where the victim - 31- was walking with her boyfriend in Moreland, Umdloti. The accused approached them and threatened the boyfriend with a knife. The victim’s boyfriend fled,” he said.

“The victim was raped and robbed of her belongings.

“The second case was reported at Robin Farm where the victim - 10 - was on her way to school when she was the accused raped her.

“She was threatened with a knife and taken to nearby bushes where he raped her. Her belongings were also taken during the attack.

“The last case was at Cottonlands area in Verulam where the victim - 19 - was sleeping at home and was attacked by the accused.

“She was also threatened with a knife before being raped. Her cellphone was stolen by the accused,” he said.

All the cases were opened at Verulam SAPS and taken over by the Phoenix Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for further investigation.

Magudulela added: “Through hard work by the members the accused was arrested and charged accordingly. - Supplied.
