TWO men, suspected to be part of a group of armed robbers who have been terrorising residents locally and around Durban, were arrested in Trenance Park, Verulam on Monday 26 September.

The two men, aged between 25 and 30, are linked to multiple cases of house robberies and hijacking that have been taking in Verulam, Pinetown, Cato Ridge and Malvern since January.

According to Verulam SAPS the Crime Intelligence Unit received a tip-off last week about two suspects en-route to Verulam to commit robbery in Inanda Road near Trenance Park.

SAPS spokesperson in Verulam Captain Mark Prakasim told Weekly that the suspects were travelling on Inanda Road when policemen spotted them.

“Our Vispol Task Team and Crime Prevention Unit members were sent to Inanda Road. They noticed a vehicle that matched the description of the suspects’ car.

“There were two occupants in the vehicle. Police stopped the driver to conduct search. The driver was found in possession of a N75 MM pistol and five rounds of ammunition.

“The other suspect was also found in possession of Norico 9MM pistol and eight rounds of ammunition. Serial numbers for both firearms were filed off. According to the information received from Crime Intelligence Unit both suspects were part of an armed gang terrorising the community,” he said.

The gang used to strike at night and hold up families at gunpoint demanding cash.

“The suspects are linked to hijacking and house robberies around Durban,” said Prakasim.

Both suspects appeared briefly at Verulam Magistrate’s Court and the matter was adjourned for further investigations.

“It is a major breakthrough by our police working in partnership with Crime Intelligence Unit.”

In a separate incident another two suspects were arrested in Trenance Park on 22 September. It alleged that the suspects are working with the gang committing house robberies and hijacking in Verulam.

Prakasim said the police were patrolling on Inanda Road when they spotted a car that matched the description of a vehicle that was stolen in Dawncrest on 14 September.

“One suspect was arrested and the other two escaped. He is remanded in police custody for further investigation,” he said.
