WhatsApp alleged rape suspect arrested

THE ?Tongaat police and the K9 Unit members arrested a 30-year-old man at the weekend for rape, robbery and kidnapping in the Fairbreeze area, Tongaat with the help of the brave victim.

The suspect used WhatsApp to lure women by promising them jobs. He then raped and robbed them.

According to police spokesman Captain Nqobile Gwala the suspect promised two women jobs and took them into a secluded area at the sugarcane fields where he tied up one and terrorised the other.

“The victim managed to escape and alerted the police. On arrival police found that the suspect had escaped.

“He continued with his evil deeds unaware that he was under the watchful eye of the police,” said Gwala.

He was caught in the act while luring another victim with the same modus operandi.

“The suspect would rape victims and rob them of their belongings, including cellphones He used the phones to lure female contacts of the victims.”

The man was taken to Tongaat police station for detention and will be charged for rape, robbery and kidnapping. He will appear in court soon.

KwaZulu-Natal acting provincial commissioner Major General Bhekinkosi Langa commended police on their alertness and determination into apprehending the suspect. “We urge other women who were victims of a similar scenario to come forward and report the incident. We also advise women to refrain from believing all job promises from strangers,” he said. - Supplied
