A WORKER killed when a granite slab fell on him was not trained and was not wearing protective clothing, a preliminary labour department investigation has revealed.

Police opened an inquest docket at the Verulam police station after Mthokozisi Ngcwangula (30) died at Katzstone Granite and Quartz on Friday, Major Shooz Magudulela said.

Two other men were injured.

Labour department spokesperson Masede Mosima said on Tuesday that according to their preliminary investigation, three employees and the company’s owner had been moving granite slabs in a container around 3.30pm on Friday.

While removing the last batch, a piece of granite fell, causing the rest to fall and strike the workers, including the company’s owner.

"One of the workers was trapped underneath the granite and, due to the weight, he died," Mosima said in a statement.

A preliminary investigation by the department's labour inspectors found Ngcwangula had not been trained.

"A risk assessment was not conducted, precautionary measures were not determined, and personal protective equipment was not issued to the workers."

Mosima said the incident was being investigated in terms of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

"If the employer is found to be negligent and flouted any aspect of the law, a recommendation to prosecute will be made to the Director of Public Prosecutions," said Mosima.
