Gang member killed by K9 handlers

2015-05-15 06:00

A MEMBER of a gang who killed two men in the botched Capitec Bank robbery, was killed after he shot at K9 handlers and their tracker dog in dense sugar cane near Richmond in January last year, the KwaZulu-Natal High Court in Pietermaritzburg heard yesterday.

Dog handler Sergeant Ricardo Smith told the court that he and others came under fire when their dog pointed out a suspect lying down in the cane field.

Tracker dog Simba had trailed suspect Senzo Mtolo in the cane and after about 100 paces Simba picked up the scent of a suspect.

Mtolo then shot at Simba, Smith and Warrant Officer Reeno Dayaram.

They fired back and he was hit. Mtolo had a Z88 pistol, similar to a police weapon, 12 cartridges and two cellphones.

The serial numbers of the pistol had been filed off.

They called for medical staff to treat Mtolo and followed Simba, who found two more suspects, one hiding in the cane and a third in thick bush near the cane.

Accused Thjulani Doncabe (40), Siboniso Mpanza (20), and Sandile Shongwe (30), have pleaded not guilty to five murders, 16 attempted murders, aggravated robbery and two car thefts.
