Marathon route is extended

2015-06-12 06:00

A NEW Harry Gwala District Marathon was launched recently. The new route of 21km was announced by the Harry Gwala District Mayor Mluleki Ndobe at a briefing at the Harry Gwala Council Chamber in Ixopo. Also at its launch were Ubuhlebezwe Mayor Zamokwakhe Nxumalo, Umzimkhulu municipality mayor Mphuthumi Mpabanga, Harry Gwala Municipal Manager Nandi Dlamini, businesses and organisations that sponsored the 2015 HGDM Marathon. The route will replace the previous five-kilometre race route which took place earlier this year. Ndobe said the move was strategic as it will pave a way for local athletes to qualify for provincial and national marathons.

The proposed race will start at Mfundweni in Umzimkhulu to Morningside in Ixopo. “We are very grateful for the media participation, the dedication of the local organising committee members and everyone who ensured the success of the previous marathon.“With this new race we want to encourage athletes from all the municipalities under the Harry Gwala district and from other regions to participate in it.”

Prizes have been improved from the last marathon as there is an additional R70 000 apportioned for the winners of 21km race. “The first marathon we had was very inspirational, it motivated us to do more in terms of sport,” Ndobe said.

He urged organisers to start their preparation early to ensure that everything for 2016 marathon is in place.

Nxumalo said the participation of the relevant stakeholders to ensure the success of the marathon is important.
