FORMER Ubuhlebezwe Municipality DA councillor Derek Ram, who resigned from the party a week ago, is now an ANC member.

Ram was officially welcomed into the party by ANC provincial Secretary Sihle Zikalala and Harry Gwala regional leadership.

The welcoming was held at ANC regional offices at Ixopo on Sunday. The ANC welcomed more than 30 new members poached from Democratic Alliance, National Freedom Party and Inkatha Freedom Party.

However, DA disputes that Ram had resigned from their party confirming that he was expelled four weeks ago due to poor performance.

The regional leadership of the ANC and provincial secretary were jubilant and the crowd were given ANC T-shirts.

Welcoming new members, Zikalala said it is encouraging to see people from other political parties joining ANC.

“Our aim is to unite all people of South Africa, to fight all the remains of apartheid, fight against ills of social justice and protect our democracy.”

He urged new members to work as activists in their branch.

Zikalala slandered opposition parties calling them counter- revolutionary.

“Opposition parties are criticising the ANC just to destroy our organisation,” said Zikalala

He criticised media saying they want to kill ANC. “Lies must not be used to kill ANC because there is no organisation other than ANC in South Africa.”

Ram said he was always an ANC member while being a DA councillor. He accused the DA of using people to get numbers and when it comes to genuine issues they were nowhere to be found. “I have took a decision to go back home where I belong, which is ANC,” said Ram.

Harry Gwala Regional ANC Chairperson Mluleki Ndobe said Ram is not new in the ANC as he was a member of the ANC before he joined the DA.

Ndobe accused the DA of being opportunist organisation. “When we heard that Ram joined ANC they were quick to issue a statement saying he has been expelled from the DA, but they knew he had already joined ANC. Ram joined the ANC before being disciplined, and resigned.”

The DA disagreed with Ndobe’s comment, saying after several attempts to rehabilitate Ram, their disciplinary committee came to the conclusion that he was not delivering on his responsibilities as an elected public representative. The DA said in the statement, part of Ram’s duties as a political representative was to submit regular reports on his activities to assist the community and respond to community queries, but he failed.

Ndobe said they are happy to welcome new members particularly coloured people. “We hope they will add value to ANC,” said Ndobe.
