THE ANC treasury general Zweli Mkhize has urged ANC members to be at the forefront of fighting against tribalism.

Speaking during Harry Gwala cadres forum at Peace Initiative Hall in Ixopo on Sunday, Mkhize said one of their fundamental teachings is to fight tribalism and to promote unity among the people of South Africa.

“As the ANC our message is simple - let us fight the demon of tribalism and our people need to know there is no place for tribalism in the ANC, in particular the people of South Africa. There is no place for racism and people must realise we are a non-racial party.”

Talking about the South African economy, Mkhize urged people to rally behind their country to improve the economy.

“We know we still face triple challenges such as poverty, unemployment and inequality, but we are working hard to curb these challenges and are moving forward as our aim is to implement the national development plan,” said Mkhize.

He said they need to strategise to build the economy of South Africa, now they are focusing on building energy to supply the country.

Mkhize said they are implementing the Freedom Charter to celebrate 21 years of democracy and they want to ensure the ANC is leading in the implementation of it.

He said they believe South Africa is a better place than before 1994 even though they continue to face the ‘triple challenges’.

Mkhize blamed some media houses for saying the ANC has done nothing to improve life for the people of South Africa.

“There are media houses who create the impression that ANC has done nothing - it is not correct. What we want from the media is to report a balance for all the achievements of the ANC.”
