Shoebox Project restarts

2015-06-12 06:00

IT is that time of the year again when Melanie Freeguard from Kokstad urges the community to open their hearts and donate to the 2015 Kokstad Shoebox Project. Freeguard initiated the Kokstad Shoe Box project in 2013 to give gifts to children from disadvantaged backgrounds, especially orphans.

She was online in 2013 trying to donate to the national Shoebox Project when she realised that Kokstad was not part of it. “I decided to initiate the Kokstad Shoebox Project to benefit local children.

“What we do is collect gifts and put them in boxes. Each box has specific items that are compulsory - toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, facecloth, an item of clothing, educational supplies, a toy and sweets.”

She said the donor has to decorate a box and fill it with the items. “For individuals who are busy or businesses who want to donate, but donand#039;t have time to do the boxes, I do the boxes myself at a cost of R150 per child.”

She said 311 children received boxes in 2013 and 304 received boxes last year.

“This year we are aiming at 400 children, and we identified many children in Twist Valley area last year who were not listed and we would like to gift these extra children,” she said.

She said the Kokstad has been very helpful to the project. “The community has responded overwhelmingly well to this project, they really opened their heart and I hope they will continue to support this project,” she said.

Anyone who is interested in the project and who wants to donate can contact Freeguard on 083 238 8872 or email mel@dorn Completed boxes can be dropped off at Dorning Motors (Kokstad) or they can be collected.
