TLC’s strategic planning meeting was ably facilitated by a representative from Hospice Palliative Care Association (HPCA), Mrs Sheryl Wurst.

The meeting took place at the TLC training centre on Thursday 16 April from 8.30am until lunchtime. All members of staff, board members and stakeholders from the community should be involved in the strategic planning process.

The meeting began with looking at the vision and mission TLC follows as an organisation.

We also included the vision and missions of other organisation we partner closely with. These included HPCA and the CaSipho Project. We do this to ensure we are “travelling” in the right direction.

Unlike other types of planning, strategic planning starts with the desired end result and works backwards to find ways to meet the desired goal. A strategic plan can be defined as follows:

Strategic planning is an organisational management activity used to set priorities, focus energy and resources, strengthen operations, ensure that employees and stakeholders are working toward common goals, establish agreement around intended outcomes and results, and assess and adjust the organisation’s direction in response to a changing environment.

The planning process takes in the vision and mission, objectives, strategies and action plans.

These processes prove to be very valuable to an organisation and remind us of what the key objectives were of the organisation when it was started.

TLC now has a concrete action plan to tackle the next few years.

TLC board members and staff are now ready and prepared to take on the challenges and goals taking our organisation forward to 2017 and beyond
