Umzimkhulu Municipality viewpoint

2015-05-29 06:00

WARM greetings to the people of Umzimkhulu.

Many attempts have been made by Umzimkhulu municipality to subdue the pressure of supplying electricity to the people and it has finally reaped fruitful.

Ward 18 and Ward 10 villages will benefit as they are among the areas which have been marked for electrification connections.

Isikhulu and surrounding villages were happy when the municipal leadership visited them to announce the projects. We are grateful that the municipality is willing to traverse the extra mile to ensure that our people are being serviced. Despite the financial challenges which hamper the attainment of the municipal objectives, electrification issues are complex because it is not always that a project cannot be done due to financial constraints - there are other contributory factors, such as energy capacity i.e. the network.

Most importantly, the areas that face network problems in Umzimkhulu are being reduced after the completion of Corinth sub-station. However, the impasse is on minor infrastructural problems. This is what is being addressed by the municipality in conjunction with the Department of Energy and Eskom.

The Isikhulu village was fortunate that the municipality, working with the Gift of the Givers, provided residents with food parcels. We understand that our people do not only want service delivery, they need something to eat as well.

In fact, it has become our routine to extend a hand in dealing with the problems of starvation. Our people are getting grants, but it is not enough and where there is an opportunity we need to close the gap.

The truck of food parcels was there and our people can attest that some food had to be returned because everyone in attendance received their parcels.

This is the marriage between the three parties - Tri-circle who is very close to Umzimkhulu municipality, Gift of the Givers and the municipality.

The relationship should be restored in order to improve the quality of life. There are few municipalities that have such mutual relationships with NGOs.
