A FAMILY who has been living in a dilapidated house in Murray Street in Kokstad was gifted hope this Mandela Day as they were promised a new house during centenary celebrations on Wednesday.

House of Grace and Fire Ministries congregants, Department of Correctional Service (DCS) staff and business people spent Mandela Day with the family, leaving smiles on their faces.

A sod turning was performed to symbolise their commitment to the building of the house.

Bonginkosi Mbotshwa, the communications officer from DCS, said grass cutting and cleaning was done by offenders and stakeholders at Ristfontein Primary in the farming area of Droewig outside Kokstad. He said DCS staff pledged to donate shoes after witnessing many pupils with old shoes.

“Offenders will be helping during the construction of the house. DCS members volunteered in many activities in Umzimkhulu, Kokstad and Matatiele,” added Mbotshwa.
