A NON-PROFIT Organisation (NPO), Risk and Reward, has introduced a programme of upskilling accounting teachers and pupils and the programme was launched at Ixopo High School last Friday to benefit Harry Gwala District schools.

The programme is the brainchild of a chartered accountant and University of KwaZulu-Natal lecture Thabane Zulu, who promised to assist schools in accounting. This was confirmed by Department of Education Harry Gwala district director Sindi Zakuza-Njakazi.

Pupils who do accounting from the three circuit management centres of Pholela, Umzimkhulu and Ixopo, will be given extra lessons in accounting and Zakuza-Njakazi welcomed the programme and said it is going to add value to the matric pass rate in the Harry Gwala District. “In Harry Gwala we need good Samaritans who will help mathematics teachers and pupils with extra knowledge so as to bring good results because last year’s performance was not good,” she said.

When the training is completed, the schools, pupils and teachers who performed well in accounting will be acknowledged by the NPO. Teachers who will participate in the programme will be asked to share their new knowledge with other teachers.

The performance of accounting in last year’s matric dropped by 8,61% in Harry Gwala. In mathematics, the district received 35,69% last year compared to 36,6% in 2016.
