THE vision of Matatiele Local Municipality —“where nature, agriculture and tourism are investments of choice” — was fulfilled after an agricultural school was opened on Tuesday. The Department of Education MEC, Mandla Makupula and Matataiele Local Municipality mayor, Momelazi Mbedla attended the official opening of Moorosi Agricultural School, at Fiva Village outside Matatiele.

The school is named after Chief Moorosi of Ludidi Traditional Council in the area.

School principal, Bongani Vuwane said the school will produce spinach, cabbage and other vegetables which will be donated to charity and local schools as well as sold to local shops.

“A local chief has given us land to plant vegetable and we hope to get big land. We aim to partner with local schools to encourage young people to get involved in agriculture.”

This year the school enrolled 115 pupils from grades 8, 9 and 10. Grade 11 classes will open next year, Grade 12 in 2019 and an agricultural college in 2020.

Some of the subjects which will be taught in the school include agriculture, agricultural science, agricultural management and practice, mathematics and technology. Pupils from grades 10, 11 and 12 will also be given opportunity to farm. At the event, wheelbarrows and seeds were donated to the school. Local farmers donated two sheep and the Department of Education donated five Bonsmara.
