Alcohol abuse high among youth

2017-08-11 06:00

THE high use of alcohol among young Kokstad people is a concern for the SAPS, among other entities.
On Friday evening, the main road, which is used by motorists going to Underberg and Matatiele was full of drunk youngsters who were dancing on it.
It is believed they had been at a Carl Macomess High farewell for the matrics that was held in city hall.
SAPS said many cases of common assault had been opened this past weekend as a result of alcohol abuse by young people.
SAPS spokesperson, Dumisani Ncongo said a case of public drinking was opened against a 30-year-old man on Saturday morning, and the man was fined.

A case of rape was opened by a 22-year-old woman who was raped by an unknown man this weekend.
“It worries police to see young people using alcohol in public places for enjoyment.
Young people must stop drinking alcohol in public,” said Ncongo.

It is suspected that alcohol caused a fight between a 31-year-old man and a 19-year-old man in Shayamoya and the 31-year-old man was stabbed to death.
A case of murder was opened against the 19 year old.

Ncongo asked tavern owners not to sell alcohol at night and asked event organisers to tighten security when hosting events in the evening.
