All ready for registration weekend

2016-04-08 06:00

THE Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has confirmed through a statement that all voting stations will be open this weekend. The IEC said 14 385 staff members have been recruited and trained and registration material has been distributed to the municipalities for distribution to the voting stations.

During the last registration drive, one million voters visited the stations in the province. New voters between the ages of 18 and 29 have the highest number, 77 388.

The commission also indicated in a statement that problems experienced at the last registration period have been solved.
Staff have been increased in areas that needed it. Clipboards will be provided to enable voters to complete forms while in queues before entering the voting station to avoid long queues.

The Department of Home Affairs will be issuing IDs at the departmental offices for people to collect.
No severe weather conditions are predicted for the weekend, but contingency plans are in place should the weather change.
