All set for district marathon

HARRY Gwala District Mayor Mluleki Ndobe assured the media that everything is in place for the 2018 Harry Gwala District Marathon, which is set to be run on March 4. Ndobe said more than 1 000 runners are expected to participate.

The briefing was held at the Umzimkhulu Council chambers on Wednesday where the 2018 marathon was officially launched.

He said the aim of hosting it is to promote a healthy lifestyle and also grow the local economy. “Each year, the marathon gains increasing support from runners who come from all provinces and neighbouring countries,” said Ndobe.

The Harry Gwala District Marathon was started in 2010 in Umzimkhulu and at the time it was a 21 km race only. When the Harry Gwala District Municipality started supporting it in 2015, runners were given a chance to participate in 42 km, 21 km, 10 km and five-kilometre races. The 42 km race will start at 6 am at Ibisi Police Station and the 21 km race will start at 6.30 am at the Umzimkhulu Municipality offices. The 10 km race will start at 6.45 am at Carrisbrooke and the finishing point for all races is Ixopo High School.

During last year’s marathon, runners complained that water and other beverages needed by the runners were not provided. Ndobe said the municipality has addressed all complaints that were raised by the runners.

One of the Comrades Marathon board members, Celo Makhoba, who has been assisting in the running of the marathon, said entries for the 10 km and five-kilometre races will be accepted on the day of the marathon. The first man and woman to finish the 42km race will win a car.
