OPERA singers performed in a concert at Kokstad College last Friday, to applause of many.

The concert was organised by music teacher, Zolani Ntoyanto in partnership with La-Teranga B&B and stakeholders.

Ntoyanto said opera is not performed often in Harry Gwala District, and the concert was held to make people aware of it.

“I want schools in the district to encourage pupils to sing opera and opera singers must teach children this,” said Ntoyanto.

Tenor Quatro Mgogo said he started singing at age seven and has since then performed many times countrywide.

“This year, I worked with Buffalo City Metropolitan Orchestra and performed solo in three concerts.

“I love this kind of music,” said Mgogo.

Singer Mike Bhayibhile grew up singing in the Old Apostolic Church and since 2000 has been part of Heavenly Voices Choir in Cape Town.

Soprano Sinazo Lobi started singing while at school and has participated in many ABC Motsepe School Choral Eisteddfods, OR Tambo Choral Music Festival, Old Mutual National Arts Festival, the Eastern Cape’s Melting Pot.

“In 2014 I came second in the provincial championship at the OR Tambo Choral Music Festival,” said Lobi.

Other opera singers who performed included Lulama Mwisi, Tabiso Busani, Adaphendula Ndudula, Nontlatla Majola and Ondela Moshoeshoe.
