FORMER KZN ANC Chairperson, Senzo Mchunu has called for ANC members to elect intelligent people who will “save the party” from a crisis when electing new leaders at the national elective congress next month.

Last Thursday Mchunu was a keynote speaker at the memorial lecture of struggle stalwart OR Tambo at the Maluti Civic Centre.

The lecture was organised by the National Health Education and Allied Workers Union.

SACP, Sanco, Sadtu, ANC, ANC Women’s League members and the community attended.

Mchunu said the abuse of public funds is high and the party has leaders who are not firm when making decisions.

“The ANC is suffering from division, a lack of leadership, corruption and abuse of resources, and as a result has lost support in many areas.

“Party members and leaders need to be guided by the principles of the party, not personal interest.”

He said members must follow in the footsteps of OR Tambo, who was humble and loyal. Mchunu’s name is on the deputy president, Cyril Ramaphosa’s candidate list and many at the lecture wore T-shirts with the words “CR17” written on in support of Ramaphosa as the next ANC president.

SACP provincial secretary in the Eastern Cape, Xolile Nqatha said ruling party leaders are arrogant and only serve their own interest.

“We want Mchunu to be the next ANC secretary general after the conference and we want more jobs for young people,” said Ntombizandile Garane, the South African National Civic Organisation deputy secretary in the Eastern Cape.
