CHAOS erupted in Horseshoe once again as angry, unemployed residents packed the J.J. Mhlongo Community Hall on Monday.

Residents, led by members of the Ward 1 Concerned Residents group, demanded jobs from Ward 1 councillor Phumzile Nocanda, claiming that he hires the same people for ward projects, most of whom are his loyalists.

The angry crowd gathered at the hall from 6am, and police had to be called to calm the rowdy crowd.

More than 50 Horseshoe residents stood outside while Nocanda and the police discussed the situation, the outcome of which is that a meeting to elect a project steering committee would be held on Tuesday.

Horseshoe resident Sibongile Tsheketsha said they are tired of being unemployed when Nocanda hires the same people every time for projects.

Nocanda denied the claims.

“Members of Concerned Resi- dents are misleading the people. We agreed in a meeting with community members that when- ever a contractor comes into the ward he must be introduced to the community.

“That is what I did when a contractor, hired to install the main pipe for flushing toilets, came to the ward and ward people were hired to work with him.

“The contractor stopped working for a while and when he returned I asked the community if I should hire the same people who worked with him before or must I get other people, and they said I must let the same people, who worked with him before, continue on the project,” he said.

Spokesperson for Concerned Residents, Mawethu Nocanda, could not be reached for comment at the time of going to press.
