THE arrest of former top municipal officials in the former



Municipality under Harry Gwala was welcomed by opposition parties.
According to a statement, the former mayor, Nomagugu Luzulane, was arrested for fraud and corruption related to the misuse of municipal funds in the municipality.
The former municipal manager, Nthabiseng Brown, was arrested for corruption and fraud after she allegedly submitted her false qualifications to the municipality. According to police, Brown and Luzulane appeared in the Durban Specialised Commercial Crime Court on April 21. Their case was postponed to June 9.

Inkatha Freedom Party member Sfiso Phakathi called for police to carry out further investigations to arrest more people who are implicated in corrupt incidents in the former


Municipality .

He said police must also prosecute those who were involved in interviews at the appointment of Brown as manager. Economic Freedom Fighters member, Sipho Jaca welcomed the arrest of former municipality managers. “EFF is against the misuse of municipal funds.”

The municipality was put under administration by the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs last year. In August, it merged with



and became the Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma­ Municipality.

Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma Municipality Mayor, Ngeneleni Mncwabe refused to comment on the matter saying the incident is not linked to the new NDZ municipality­.

The Hawks also arrested two ward councillors in the former Ingwe


for receiving social grants from Sassa illegally. According to a police statement, R35 000 was lost by Sassa through the fraud committed by the councillors.

The councillors appeared in the Durban Specialised Commercial Crime Court on April 25 and were granted bail of R2 000 each. The case was postponed to June 3.
